Coconuts growing by the Coast in the village of Bau. Coconut palms were everywhere, in several varieties, and provided a great source of fresh water to drink.

Frond of a tree fern growing near the village of Saigara. The tree ferns were everywhere at lower altitudes, but gradually petered out as we moved inland up the Waria river.

I'm not sure whether this man was the chief, or simply a figure of prominence in the village of Pema. In any event, he met us decked out in traditional garb to welcome us (they more often just wore shorts and t-shirts).

Dragons and waves over the entrance to a shrine on "Hagurosan," a sacred mountain in Yamagata prefecture. Dragons are seen as protector spirits in Shinto.

Another sunset over the Sea of Japan- this one taken near Sasagawanagare. Torii denote sacred space in Shinto, usually marking the entrance to a shrine. This one simply opens out onto the sea behind it.
